Will Smith Almost Passed on ‘Men In Black’

In a candid chat with Kevin Hart for the ‘Hart to Heart’ series, Will Smith opened up about his journey in the entertainment world and his iconic role as “Agent J” in ‘Men In Black.’ Surprisingly, Smith almost turned down the opportunity to portray the beloved character.

Smith credited his former manager James Lassiter for having a keen eye when it came to selecting roles that would become defining moments in his career. However, he revealed that he initially had reservations about some of those roles. Specifically, he expressed reluctance about taking on the roles of Chris Gardner in ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ and Muhammad Ali in ‘Ali.’

As for ‘Men in Black,’ Smith admitted he had mixed feelings. After starring in ‘Independence Day,’ he was hesitant to jump into another alien-themed movie right away. It was then that the legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg intervened to change his mind.

Spielberg made a bold move by flying Smith to his home on a helicopter for a one-on-one conversation. The director posed a simple but powerful question: “Why don’t you want to make my movie?” Smith explained that his hesitation stemmed from not wanting to be typecast as “the alien guy.”

However, Spielberg’s persuasive approach and the compelling vision he presented for ‘Men in Black’ ultimately convinced Smith to take on the role of “Agent J.” The rest, as they say, is history.

The interview sheds light on the pivotal role of behind-the-scenes figures in shaping an actor’s career. Smith’s collaboration with Spielberg not only led to a successful film but also contributed to his evolution as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and celebrated actors.

The candid conversation between Will Smith and Kevin Hart provides a glimpse into the inner workings of the entertainment industry and the decisions that can make or break an actor’s trajectory. It serves as a reminder that even the biggest stars face dilemmas and doubts on their path to greatness, and that a little encouragement and visionary guidance can lead to iconic performances and lasting legacies.
