Queen Latifah’s national anthem performance takes social media by storm

On the evening of September 10th, Queen Latifah graced both longtime admirers and new fans with a magnificent rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the NFL matchup between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium. The multi-talented artist, renowned for her roles as a rapper, singer, songwriter, record executive, producer, and actress, proudly hails from her native New Jersey. With her performance, she effortlessly showcased to a global audience why she’s celebrated across multiple facets of the entertainment world.

In a stylish two-piece checkered ivory pantsuit, Queen Latifah delivered the national anthem as a heartfelt tribute on the solemn occasion of 9/11, alongside a choir representing the New York Fire Department (FDNY) and New York Police Department (NYPD). As the living legend concluded her rendition, the audience erupted in cheers, acknowledging her “pitch-perfect” performance.

Interestingly, while many of Queen Latifah’s long-standing fans have long been aware of her vocal talents, newer supporters on social media expressed surprise at her singing abilities. On Twitter, some posts from those less familiar with her musical prowess included comments like, “Queen Latifah sings????,” “I had no clue Queen Latifah sings,” and “Wait, Queen Latifah sings? Since when? She is always gonna be a rapper to me.”

Her dedicated older fans chimed in as well, offering insights like, “People are JUST finding out that Queen Latifah sings? Have they not seen ‘Chicago’ or ‘Hairspray’? Or saw that she released two jazz albums? Or even when she played Bessie Smith in that HBO movie?”

In the 1990s, this iconic artist parlayed her success in hip hop into a flourishing acting career, joining the ranks of other popular rappers from that era, including LL Cool J and Will Smith. Simultaneously, her music resonated with fans from diverse backgrounds. In 1995, she clinched the Best Rap Solo Performance Grammy Award for her hit “U.N.I.T.Y.” Additionally, the Library of Congress National Recording Registry bestowed the honor of permanent preservation upon her album “All Hail the Queen.”
