Ja Morant drops 34 points and makes game-winner in his return from suspension!

Morant was relentless in Grizzlies’ come-from-behind victory

Ja Morant, the dynamic guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, marked his return to the 2023-24 NBA season in spectacular fashion on Tuesday. After a 235-day hiatus, Morant showcased his prowess by scoring an impressive 34 points on 12-for-24 shooting, coupled with eight assists, two steals, a block, and a game-winning play.

In the closing moments of the game with a tied score and only 9.1 seconds left, the Grizzlies entrusted Morant with the ball. He skillfully maneuvered past Herb Jones, securing a thrilling come-from-behind victory with a final score of 115-113. Morant’s absence from the first 25 games was due to a suspension for conduct detrimental to the league, stemming from an incident on May 13 when he brandished a gun during a livestream.

In a post-game interview, Morant expressed his excitement about being back on the court, emphasizing the therapeutic nature of basketball for him. The game highlighted the impact of Morant’s ability to penetrate the paint on the Grizzlies’ offense, which ranked last before Tuesday’s game.

Morant’s return showcased his playmaking skills, initiating high pick-and-roll plays, executing precise passes to teammates, and making key plays under the basket. His performance was crucial in the Grizzlies’ second-half comeback after trailing by as much as 24 points. Morant’s relentless attacks on the basket, including a dazzling spin move for an and-1 play, played a pivotal role in narrowing the gap.

In the final two minutes of the game, Morant seized the lead for the Grizzlies multiple times, demonstrating his scoring versatility with a floater, a twisting layup, and the game-winning shot. Jaren Jackson Jr. contributed 24 points and three blocks, while Desmond Bane added 21 points and five assists. Despite Morant’s outstanding performance, New Orleans’ Brandon Ingram matched his 34 points in a losing effort.

The victory improved Memphis’s season record to 7-19. The Morant show continues as the Grizzlies gear up to host the Indiana Pacers on Thursday.
