Issa Rae is revealed to be the 2024 American Black Film Festival’s creative director

She’ll be working alongside the founders of the festival to program its 28th installment.

Issa Rae, known for her remarkable contributions to television, is taking on an exciting new role as the creative director for Nice Crowd’s American Black Film Festival (ABFF). This prestigious festival is set to make waves from June 12 to 15 in the vibrant setting of Miami Beach.

Notably, Issa Rae had previously served as the festival’s ambassador last year, demonstrating her strong connection to the world of film and entertainment. She even provided sneak peeks of her popular TV series, “Rap Sh!t,” at the ABFF. Now, she’s stepping into a more extensive partnership with the ABFF, working closely with the festival’s co-founders and producers, Nicole and Jeff Friday, to curate the 2023 program.

Issa shared her enthusiasm for this partnership, emphasizing the festival’s unique role in elevating Black creatives in the industry. She remarked, “There’s no other festival highlighting us in this way, highlighting our film, highlighting our television shows, and it’s in an elegant way. That’s what I admire so much about this particular festival — it’s so intentional. Even thinking about the awards that they do later, ABFF as a brand is so solid, and I feel proud of having my work showcased here.”

Nicole and Jeff Friday, the festival’s co-founders and producers, expressed their deep appreciation for Issa Rae’s dedication to promoting inclusion and diversity, especially for Black creatives. They believe she is the perfect partner to further the ABFF’s mission of showcasing Black talent and amplifying new voices.

In addition to her role in film, 2023 has seen Issa expanding her horizons beyond television. In July, her audio division, Raedio, which is part of Hoorae Media, signed a multi-year deal with Def Jam Recordings, marking an exciting chapter in her impressive career.
