The UK’s Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, is planning to ban American XL Bully dogs in the wake of an attack on an 11-year-old girl in Birmingham. Braverman asserts that this breed poses a significant and lethal threat to society, particularly to children, and she has sought urgent advice on implementing the ban.

However, it’s important to note that American XL Bullies are not officially recognized as a specific breed by the Kennel Club. This raises concerns about the practicality of enforcing such a ban, given the challenge of defining the breed accurately. There is a risk that other breeds might inadvertently be banned as well.

Sir John Hayes has also been actively campaigning in the House of Commons to ban American XL Bullies. This effort gained momentum following the tragic death of a 10-year-old boy in South Wales, who was attacked by a dog of the same breed in 2021.

Currently, there are four banned breeds of dogs in the UK: Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, Pit Bull Terrier, and Japanese Tosa. However, animal welfare organizations like the RSPCA oppose breed-specific bans. They argue that thousands of innocent animals are euthanized merely because they are perceived as dangerous. Instead, they advocate for a focus on individual dogs and their owners.

These organizations are supported in their stance by the Dog Trust, which calls for legislation enabling early intervention to prevent incidents involving certain dogs and their owners.

In the aftermath of the recent attack in Birmingham, the 11-year-old victim is in recovery, along with two men who bravely intervened and were injured while trying to rescue her from the dog’s aggression.
