Dr Martin Luther King’s Youngest Son Dexter Passes Away

The King Center has sadly announced the passing of Dexter King, the youngest son and third child of Martin Dr. Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King.

Dexter Scott King, a key figure in the civil rights movement and the son of Martin Luther King Jr., has passed away at the age of 62 after a battle with prostate cancer, as confirmed by a family statement.

Leah Weber King, Dexter’s wife, shared that he transitioned peacefully in his sleep at their home in Malibu, emphasizing his bravery and resilience in facing the challenges of the disease. In expressing her grief, Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of The King Center, noted the profound loss of another sibling and requested prayers for strength during this difficult time. Martin Luther King III, Dexter’s brother, echoed the sentiments of sudden shock and devastation, emphasizing the need for prayers for the entire King family.

Dexter Scott King, born on January 30, 1961, played a significant role as the chairman of The King Center. A graduate of Frederick Douglass High School and Morehouse College in Atlanta, he dedicated his life to preserving his father’s legacy and managing the intellectual property left behind. Survived by his wife Leah Weber, sister Dr. Bernice King, brother Martin Luther King III, and his niece Yolanda Renee King, Dexter’s passing marks a moment of deep sadness for the King family and the broader community. Martin Luther King III urged everyone to keep the entire King family, especially Dexter’s wife Leah Weber, in their thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.

Details about a memorial service will be announced at a later time.
